What is Debt Review?
The National Credit Act formally introduced Debt Counselling to assist over-indebted consumers like yourself by developing a repayment plan, which is affordable to you as well as acceptable to all your Credit Providers.
This process is intended to assist consumers struggling with debt; through budget advice, negotiation with Credit Providers for reduced payments and the restructuring of debts.
Will I get blacklisted if I go under debt counselling?
No, while you are under Debt Review, your Credit Providers cannot “blacklist” you. However, if the “blacklisting” takes place before you apply for Debt Review, it will reflect on your credit record. This is another reason why you should rather apply earlier than later for Debt Review.
If I’m married COP must my spouse also be part of the debt counselling process?
Yes, you will need legal consent from your spouse to engage with the Debt Review process, and both parties need to provide us with consent to a credit check and financial assessment.
Can I still use my accounts if I go under debt counselling?
No. The idea is to get you debt free. Therefore, you will not be allowed to incur further debt while you are under Debt Review. Once your obligations towards your Credit Providers have been satisfied, we will issue you with a clearance certificate and you will be able to apply for credit again.
Can I open any new accounts while under debt counselling?

Can I apply for Home & Vehicle finance while under debt counselling?
I’m under debt review. I need money now. Can I get a loan? This is a question many South Africans ask when they’re under debt review. The answer to this question is both yes and no. You’re not allowed to, but people often find ways to bypass the rules. However, do consult with us before you start exploring options to understand the possible repercussions.
Can I sell my Car or House while under debt counselling?
Yes, you can. Your assets are still very much under your control, however, it is strongly encouraged that you consult your debt councilor regarding major financial decisions. After all, our job is to help you overcome your financial strain.
Can I go under debt counselling if I am self-employed?
Yes, you can still qualify. Each set of circumstances are unique, and are based on personalised affordability.
Do I have to be working to go under debt counselling?
The Debt Counselling/Review process does require an affordability plan to be put into place, which requires proof of a stable income under the National Credit Act, and therefore you will need to be employed (even self-employed) and have proof of a stable income.
What happens if I lose my Job while under counselling?
You have to provide us with a affidavit stating that you are no longer employed. We thin inform your credit providers of your situation and you then you are granted 3 months to find employment, and once that happens your debt counselling process will continue.
Can I apply for debt counselling if I have judgements on my name?
You can still contact us. There might be other means of assisting you. The sooner you contact us, the better our chances are of finding a workable solution for you.
How long will I be under debt review?
It is different for everybody as every situation is unique. In order to lower your monthly instalments, we have to extend your repayment periods.
Does my employer need to be informed that I'm under debt review?
No, this is a private matter and is conducted between The Debt Surgeon and you, the client.
Can I apply for debt counselling if I am unemployed?
Unfortunately not, in order for your Debt Counselling application to be to be accepted by your credit providers you need to be able to make the monthly payments that will be negotiated with them.
Will my insurance and life policies be affected by me being under debt counselling?
Not at all. Provision is made in your debt repayment plan for all your insurance policies.
Does being under debt counselling affect me negatively if I had to apply for a job?
Not at all, it should not have a negative impact when you apply for another job in the future.
